This program consists of one to three weeks of a Spanish cultural immersion, followed by 5 days of trekking & kayaking throughout the jungle.

Expedition details


Visit the Biosphere Reserve with the most biodiversity in Mexico, “Montes Azules”.

Traverse the Reserve in kayaks on the Lacantum River.

Raft down the Lacanja River and get to know the amazing archaelogical sites of Tenam Puente, Yaxchilan, Bonampak and Palenque.


Day 1

Expedition to Lagos de Montebello, Chiapas

We leave early from San Cristobal de las Casas to visit Tenam Puente archaelogical site and Lagos de Montebello. After that, we travel to the Ixcan River in the Lacandon jungle to embark in kayaks, rowing 1 hour to arrive at the Ixcan campsite, where we'll sleep in the jungle in tents on the river's edge.

Day 2

Expedition, rowing on Lacantum River, Chiapas

We start rowing at 10 am on the Lacantum River and at a certain point, we go into the jungle for 2 hours to visit an small archaelogical site that still has no name and then have lunch surrounded by lush jungle vegetation. We'll finish the afternoon in the kayaks and then arrive at the Chajul/Loma Bonita community where we'll meet up with the van once more. After that, we'll drive about two and a half hours towards the Lacanja Chansayab community to sleep at the Rio Lacanja campsite.

Day 3

Expedition to Yaxchilan, Chiapas

We get an early start to the day heading to the community of Chol de Frontera Corozal where we'll take a motorboat to navigate the Usumacinta River, the river with the strongest currents in Mexico. Then we arrive at the lost city of Yaxchilan, one of the most amazing archaelogical sites in Chiapas whose temples rise up from the middle of the the jungle. We'll go back to the Lacanja Campsite where we'll go down an interpretive path to better understand the importance of the perennial jungle. We'll sleep at the Lacanja River Campsite.

Day 4

Expedition, Waterfalls, Chiapas

In the morning, we'll visit the ruins of Bonampak, which in the Mayan langage means Painted Walls. It is famous for its painted murals which are the most important and best preserved of the classical Mayan style. After that, we go back to the campsite to start the way in the raft on the Lacanja River. The first part of the river is a sequence of waterfalls that lasts about one hour. There are smalls waterfalls and some big ones (class III - up to 2.5 meters high). After that, we row another hour until we arrive at the Lacanja archaelogical site which is about 15 minutes walking distance from the shore of theriver. Afterwards, we visit the Moctuniha waterfalls for a swim andlunch. We come back to the campsite through the jungle, we sleepanother night at the Lacanja campsite.

Day 5

Expedition, Banampak walls, Chiapas

We go to the archaelogical site of Palenque early where we visit one of the most important Mayan cities. Afterwards, we return to San Cristobal de Las Casas and on the way we visit two waterfalls: Misolha and Agua Azul.
End of the trip.
