Cultural Activities & Guided Visits

La Casa en el Arbol offers an exciting array of organized activities for its students. Some of the activities during the week are not included in the price of the weekly tuition. Weekend activities outside San Cristobal usually have a small fee for transportation, guide fees, and food.

All these activities are included in the Spanish immersion program.

Paper Workshop Cooperative



The Maya Medicine Development Center:

This center still cures people using ancient Mayan medicine, mostly using plants. Birth are still given in a traditional way.


The Museum of Ambar

You will learn about the peculiarity of the ambar of chiapas as well as see unique pieces with incrusted insects. Tips about how to recognize real ambar will be given.


A Paper Workshop Cooperative

This cooperative recycles paper making beautiful pieces of art as well as books. One technique consists of incrusting petals from a variety of colored flowers. Pre-Hispanic paper is also made.


The Museum of Traditional Costumes

This unique museum has rare costumes from indigenous villages. Each costume has a meaning and is characteristic to a village. The museum founder, our guide, spent his life healing people for free as well as building schools and water reservoirs in various communities.


San Cristóbal Traditional Market

You feel like going back in time. A must see!


Coffee Museum

This short visit will guide you through the steps of how coffee is processed, from the land to your cup.

CHAMULA

This popular village proudly keeps strong traditions and character.
The ceremonies occuring within the church of the main place are a mix of Maya culture & Catholic traditions.

ZINACANTAN

This village keeps strong traditions too. It is famous for his clothes and fields of flowers.
You may visit an indigenous back-strap loom weaving cooperative run by women.
